Good shoe, just not the right shoe for me. (2010-04-22)
I ordered this shoe after reading the awesome reveiws on this product. There was no sizing chart to figure out what size I needed, therefore, I ordered my usual shoe size. The item I received was way too big.
Upon inspection of the shoe, the toe area of the shoe is really wide. I didn't realized it in looking at the pictures of the shoe, but it resembles a clog style shoe. It seems to have not only excellent ventalation but also excellent drainage capabilities.
I did try the shoe on and it hugged my ankle really well.
I would've exchanged for a smaller size, but I didn't want to be tripping over the wide toe area.
Overall, seems to be a well constructed and durable shoe.
Everything I wanted...and more (2010-03-31)
I've only worn this shoe on the river for eleven days, so I can't speak to the long-term ruggedness of the product. But it has done well everything I wanted it to do, so I have to give the shoe a perfect rating at this point. I was hoping to find a shoe that would work well both on the river and on day hikes away from the river. I didn't know if I could find one shoe to meet these divergent needs, but this shoe does it all for me. It is one of my all-time happiest purchases.
In the river: It has drain holes even in the soles to allow water to flow out. It has laces which can be pulled tight to help prevent the shoes from being sucked from my feet in deep river muck. And unlike the Keen shoes I looked at first, this shoe has mesh over the openings to keep out the small pebbles that love to lodge under your feet and make life miserable until you stop and remove the shoe and dig out the pebbles. Like the previous reviewer, I like the extra protection these shoes provide compared to river sandals. The shoe doesn't dry instantaneously, but I suppose that is too much to ask.
Off the river: I wore these shoes on two day hikes, one of about six hours duration and another of about four hours of continuous walking on trails, slick rock, scree, and climbing boulder-strewn canyons. I like the laces again, because I can pull them open to make more room in the shoe for wearing socks on day hikes. The soles grip well on wet and dry rocks, and I didn't feel sharp rock edges through the soles. I also like the low-impact color. (My shoe is the stone gray model that does not have the prominent orange accents shown in the main product picture.) I guess I should just come out and admit it. I love this shoe.
Great river shoes (2009-06-08)
I do field research on rivers and streams and have been looking for a light weight, durable, comfortable quick drying shoe forever... I finally found it in this shoe. It has a good sole that grips well on wet rocks, the outer surface is durable and protects your feet much better than Chacos or other sandles - and yet this shoe is light weight and easier to walk in than a big wading boot, plus I can put inserts into these shoes and this helps save my feet after a long day hiking on the river.
