Pretty Good (2010-03-23)
Comfortable walking shoe for short distances. Fits good. Not a lot of support (which is understandable). A very ugly shoe in the picture and even worse in person. Can't speak for its durability yet, but seems fairly solid.
Good for use as water shoes (2009-09-19)
I bought these for use as water shoes. We recently bought a lake house and our neighbors recommended that we always wear water shoes because the lake has a zebra mussel population. I've worn these in the lake several times and am very happy with them. If they drained a bit better I would have given 5 stars, but I know that the shoes are more for hiking than for use in water. As to the review questioning the sizing, they may run a bit small. I bought the size I normally wear, knowing that I would rarely (if ever) be wearing socks with them and the size is fine.
A Pair of Hiking Shoes These Are Not (2009-08-29)
I love hiking and average about one hike a week. I recently wore my brand new Teva Atrato shoes to a 8-mile hike on a trail in South Lake Tahoe (moderate elevation gain). No sooner had I started on the trail than I realized that these shoes weren't very well-suited for hiking. Here's why:
The Bad
-------
Unless you're using these shoes for a urban/semi-urban hike where you're walking mostly on pavement or on a very level dirt road, the soles of these shoes are just too thin for most hiking terrain. On my hike, I could almost feel every bump on the rocky, gravelly, or uneven parts of the trail. These shoes really don't offer very much in the way of comfort or protection.
The Good
--------
These shoes, however, get top marks for breathability. On the hike, we had to trudge through an area of wetland with water level well past our ankles - these shoes were completely submerged. Once we were back on dry land, the ventilator monofilament mesh on the sides of these shoes did a very nice job of quickly draining my waterlogged shoes.
---
Even though these Teva Atrato shoes are sold here as "hiking" shoes, they are a part of Teva's line of amphibious shoes made for aquatic activities such as kayaking or whitewater rafting (this model seems to have been discontinued).
If you're looking for a pair of hiking shoes, you're better off with a proper pair of waterproof Gore-tex hiking shoes.
As a pair of amphibious shoes - 5 stars.
Great fit and support! Water drain quickly and they dry out fast! (2009-07-30)
The Teva- Atrato shoes are a great buy! They are true to size and give great support! My son wore them while hiking and jumping from a bridge in a river in Maine. The shoes stayed on and gave great trachion on the wet boulder on the side of the river. They drained quickly and dried fast! I would recommend these shoes.
Excellent Shoe - Weak Drawstring (2008-05-12)
I purchased these shoes about a year ago for a trip to the BWCA area in Minnesota. I used them hard for 8 days of hiking, walking in knee deep water, swimming, etc. There are numerous positive attributes to these shoes including:
*Shoes drain terrifically and dry quickly
*Shoes are very light (I was even able to partially swim in them)
*Shoes have excellent grip, even in water, and prevent rolling of ankles
In-spite of these attributes I cannot give this shoe a full 5 stars as after the second day of use one of the drawstrings tore. I was able to knot the strings together and use them for the remainder of my trip, but it was surprising how quickly these broke. Teva does not provide replacement parts, and I ultimately had to pay 10 dollars to ship the used shoes back to Teva for a full refund (minus shipping).
In summary: I will probably buy these shoes again, but take it easier on the drawstring.
